Jurassic (144-206 million years ago) Breccia Oniciata is quarried from a bedrock quarry in Breccia, Italy and is one of the five tones that are selected from the multiple quarries near Lake Garda. The unique veining and movement characteristics of this stone will vary between shipments. Because of this, viewing multiple pieces is highly recommended as it will help to ensure you are receiving the most accurate variation of the stone that you are expecting. The term Breccia means broken in Italian, which is where the name is derived. It is a common characteristic for this stone to have voids in the raw material. Before it reaches the polishing stages, these voids are filled with a polyester resin. Depending on how deep the void is, the resin may shrink as it dries, which will leave the surface of the filled area slightly lower than the rest. This does not affect the durability, maintenance or beauty of the stone. Due to its qualities, the slabs are book-matched, in which slab one and slab two will be cut and polished to create a mirror image of each other. These are then kept in sequence, which allows for a consistent flow in pattern. Finally, a mesh backing is adhered to the back of this delicate stone to ensure safety while handling and fabricating the slab.
