Throughout a home, or any space, focusing on universal design offers an environment that is accessible for everyone. If there\u2019s a style you love, it can be tailored to Universal Design standards and carried through your home. With our variety of tile and slab products, you\u2019ll find a wonderful selection for both inside and outside your home that allows you to achieve Universal Design.<\/p>\n

By looking at each room individually, we will develop a design sense that follows Universal Design principles while still having the flexibility to include details you love in each space. For a basis to it all, understanding the standards of this design philosophy will be key to capturing the proper approach.<\/p>\n

What is Universal Design?<\/h2>\n

Universal Design (UD) is not one simple function, but a homogeneous concept. Universal Design is about creating spaces that are accessible and functional for everyone, regardless of age, disability or other factors.<\/p>\n

Considered the \u201cfather of universal design,\u201d Ronald Mace can be thanked for his huge impact on day-to-day living for those with disabilities. Born a healthy child in 1940, Mace became wheelchair-bound at the age of nine due to polio. Having already experienced life without disability, he soon learned the extensive barriers that he would need to navigate. After graduating from NC State University in 1966 with an architectural degree, Mace strayed from traditional design to focus on \u201cuniversal design.\u201d He aimed to design architecture that accommodated all people, regardless of physical ability, while still offering a desirable aesthetic.<\/p>\n

Principles of Universal Design<\/h2>\n

Following are the Principles of Universal Design (definitions and examples retrieved from ncsu.edu<\/a>; also, visit the site for each principle\u2019s guidelines).<\/p>\n

\"Sensor-Manipulated

  1. Equitable Use: The design is useful and marketable to people with diverse abilities.\n

    1. Sensor-manipulated powered doors<\/li>\n
    2. Amalgamated, dispersed, and adaptable seating in public spaces, like theaters<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
        \n
      1. Flexibility in Use: The design accommodates a wide range of individual preferences and abilities.\n
          \n
        1. Scissors designed for right or left-handed users<\/li>\n
        2. An ATM having visual, tactile (braille), and audible functions<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          \"Escalators

          1. Simple and Intuitive Use: Use of the design is easy to understand, regardless of the user\u2019s experience, knowledge, language skills, or current concentration level.\n

            1. An escalator or moving sidewalk (like in airports)<\/li>\n
            2. Instructional manual with just images<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
            3. Perceptible Information: The design communicates necessary information effectively to the user, regardless of ambient conditions or the user\u2019s sensory abilities.\n

              1. Tactile, visual, and auditory cues on thermostats<\/li>\n
              2. Redundant cueing in public transit stations<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                1. Tolerance for Error: The design minimizes hazards and the adverse consequences of accidental or unintended actions.\n

                  1. An \u201cundo\u201d feature in computer software, like in a notepad<\/li>\n
                  2. A double-cut car key that is easily inserted either way<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
                  3. Low Physical Effort: The design can be used efficiently, comfortably, and with minimal fatigue.\n
                      \n
                    1. Lever handles on doors<\/li>\n
                    2. Touch lamps<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
                    3. Size and Space for Approach and Use: Appropriate size and space are provided for approach, reach, manipulation, and use regardless of the user\u2019s body size, posture, or mobility.\n
                        \n
                      1. Controls on the front of appliances and clear floor space around mailboxes, dumpsters, etc.<\/li>\n
                      2. Wide gates at transit stations<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                        With motivation guiding his vision, in 1989, Mace established The Center for Universal Design at North Carolina State University, which carried a mission \u201cto improve the quality and availability of housing for people with disabilities, including disabilities that result from aging.\u201d\u00a0 This mission statement and more information can be read at design.ncsu.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n

                        Additionally, because of Mace\u2019s astounding accomplishments, he paved the way for federal regulations like the Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.<\/p>\n

                        Room by Room<\/h2>\n

                        With all of the above examples in mind, it is now easier to approach UD Standards whether your plans are for a new home or remodel. Even if no one in your home currently needs these accommodations, it will help with aging-in-place, people who may visit your home; and resale. However, some of the ideas help with simple housekeeping, navigation through the home, and general ease of living.<\/p>\n

                        Outdoor Universal Design<\/strong><\/h3>\n

                        Universal Design for outdoor spaces eliminates steps and steep slopes; keeps walkways a minimum of 36\u201d wide; and uses surface material that will help minimize slips and falls.<\/p>\n

                        R11 Finish Tile<\/a> and Pavers provide versatility to your design with different aesthetics while offering a unique grip on the surface. Areas prone to water and moisture can be incredibly slippery when not using the proper material. R11 Finish tile makes for a safe, practical, and functional aesthetic on patios, decks, and pool areas.
