With such a diverse selection of tile patterns available today, restoring a period home is easier than it was in the past. The ability to recreate certain time periods using period tiles is an exciting endeavor for many homeowners, whether replacing a few tiles or installing new.

It is important to carefully select new tile to ensure it matches with the proper period of your home. Take the time to research all the existing options and determine which ones are the closest to the style you need.

Tips for Using Period Tiles

Here are some tips to follow when looking to use period tiles in your home restoration project.

  • Just as you would view sample paint colors in your home under actual lighting conditions, you’ll want to do the same with tiles since changes in the source of light can alter their appearance. Place potential new tiles next to old ones and compare them at various times of the day, including both daytime and evening.
  • Keep in mind that tile shades can have slight variations, even within original batches from the same manufacturer, making the color appear richer on some tiles than others. If your period tiles have similar variations, you can mix two or three matching shades and space the tiles in a visually appealing pattern.
  • If possible, buy plenty of extra tiles to store away in case repairs are needed in the future. Even if you are not able to find a perfect match, you should be able to obtain a period tile that is a close enough fit to enable you to create a beautifully restored, period appropriate finished product.
