When starting a new patio & backyard landscaping project, it's important to keep it safe and enjoyable for the little ones in your life. Here are a handful of our favorite kid-friendly landscaping ideas, great for toddlers and older children alike.

Safety First

There are a few safety factors to consider before beginning a new landscaping project, especially if you have curious and active kids.

  • Avoid choosing plants and flowers that are toxic to children, including holly, azaleas, daffodils, calla lilies and other common plants.
  • Opt for non-slip pavement surfaces and tile around landscaping pools, patios and water features; choose tumbled or honed finishes for outdoor stone tile such as travertine, rather than slicker polished surfaces.
  • Install a secure fence around your pool

Provide Shade

Help the kids avoid sunburn and beat the heat by landscaping with plenty of shady foliage and trees. If your yard does not already feature established shade trees, take advantage of the shading power of plants like lilac, rhododendron or evergreen shrubs. Create a "shade corner" of the yard or be sure to provide extra shade in areas where the kids will play most often, such as near a sandbox or pool.

Add a Pathway

Grass can hide holes and uneven areas in the ground that can cause kids to trip and fall. Laying a path of non-slip stone tiles or pavers through your yard and landscaping is an easy, practical and stylish way to give kids - especially toddlers - some even terrain to walk on.

Build a Kids' Play Area

A mulched area or tiled hardscape in a corner of the backyard provides a great place for kids to play while the adults enjoy the patio or outdoor kitchen. Keep it fun and kid-friendly by adding a larger-than-life outdoor game board of tiles. Hopscotch, Scrabble, Checkers and more can all be added to your backyard landscaping or patio area by installing multicolored tiles.

Other kid-friendly landscaping additions include hammocks, a sandbox, or a miniature playhouse.

Create a Children's Garden

Landscaping can be both stylish for you and fun for the kids. Turn a section of landscaping into a miniature garden to help your kids learn about nature and gardening. Plant a few types of easy-to-maintain vegetables, fruits and flowers that the little ones will love to care for and cultivate.
