The best time of year to do a home renovation depends on a few factors, including your location, climate and the type of project at hand. Let’s break down the seasons of the year and discuss some important tips and considerations when trying to plan and schedule your remodel.

Spring & Summer

In most climates, spring and summer are by far the busiest times in a contractor’s schedule. Since it is convenient to do most projects when the weather is not too cold, hot or rainy, April through June are popular months for many jobs simply due to the weather. If you wish to plan your home renovation for the busy season, be sure to schedule it in advance with your contractor to ensure it can be done when you need it.

Due to supply and demand, keep in mind that some building supplies and materials may be more expensive or harder to find in stock at this time of year. If you’re planning a renovation during the busy season, be sure to shop around for the best deals and seek out discounts on materials needed for your renovation project. It can also help to buy materials in advance of the project if you know what you’ll need.

The Holidays

No matter where you live, late fall and the holiday season (October-December) is typically when business slows down for most contractors. At this time of year, people usually don’t want to start a new remodel. However, if you’re willing to have an ongoing project during the holidays, you may be able to benefit from less expensive materials and maybe a labor discount from contractors who are looking for work. Plus, keeping an eye on Black Friday deals can help you save on big-ticket items for your remodel, like new kitchen appliances, fixtures and furniture.

Winter

While some jobs simply can’t be done in below-freezing or snowy weather conditions, most interior work and some outdoor jobs are actually perfect for winter. Whether or not to do a home renovation during this time is mostly dependent on your climate and the type of job you’re planning.

If you live in the Midwest or Northeast US, winter is the off-season for many contractors. While it may not be the most ideal time to renovate based on the weather, you might find it easier to fit into a contractor’s less-busy schedule. Plus, their labor costs may be lower since business is slow during winter. For outdoor projects that can’t easily be done in the winter, such as foundations or decks, this season is still a great opportunity to plan the project with your contractor so they can start immediately when the weather’s right.

In the South and Southwest, however, cooler temperatures in the winter are more comfortable for builders, so this time of year is often most popular in a hotter climate. Particularly for jobs involving outdoor work, winter is the best time to renovate your house if you live somewhere that’s warm all year.
