Home projects are exciting to do and bring a lot of anticipation of having something fresh and new in your living space. But, when these projects involve using outside contractors, many people become uneasy about having a work crew in their home. Here are some tips for working with and managing outside contractors that will help make the experience pleasant for everyone.
Get Off to a Good Start
Most work crews are respectful of property and personal space without having to be told upfront. Before the project begins, you can communicate some helpful information, such as the best door to use and whether they can leave tools overnight, but don’t give them a list of “ground rules” or make demands. If something is done that you’re uncomfortable with or that’s unacceptable, then you can have a discussion about it.
Always be sure to provide a warm welcome by smiling, making eye contact and saying “hello”. Ask about their weekend and stick around to listen to their responses. Then go about your business so they can get to theirs. And do let them use your bathroom. Although you may want to replace your bath linens with disposable paper hand towels beforehand!
Clear Work Area
Do everyone a favor and remove any breakables and valuables from the work area. While most workers will be careful to avoid damaging anything, accidents do happen so there’s no need to take any chances.
Give Them Space
One of the best things you can do to ensure work gets done properly and progresses at a reasonable pace is to stay out of the way. They’re professionals who know what they’re doing so let them do their job without hovering over them and trying to micromanage everything. Just remain nearby to answer any questions that may arise.
Communicate with the Project Lead
In order to avoid confusion and maintain consistency, communication should be through you and the project lead whenever possible. The project lead is the person to voice any concerns to and who will give you project updates and time frames. Follow these tips and you’ll be well on your way to having a happy work crew and a less stressful environment all around. Renovating or remodeling your home?
