The Origin of Subway Tile

This much loved tile gets its name from its use on the walls of New York City subway stations in the early-1900’s. Its durability and easy maintenance made it the tile of choice, not only in subway stations, but on the walls in numerous commercial spaces, including hospitals and restaurants. With clean lines, the standard 3” by 6” rectangles and 4” by 4” squares became popular for their practicality and simple beauty.

An Updated Look to a Classic Tile

Now there are a variety of subway tile options available to suit different tastes and design needs. The tile in our Bevel Subway Series (update: no longer available) adds a subtle detail to classic subway tile, while maintaining the simple, crisp look subway tile is known for. Looking great in both modern and vintage designs, beveled subway tile is the perfect way to add a slight bit of unexpectedness to your design scheme without having to do a whole lot. Using a bevel subway tile will liven up a basic kitchen or bathroom backsplash, adding dimension to the walls in an otherwise neutral room.

To create a design that maintains a traditional component but has modern appeal, try mixing it up by installing the tile both horizontally and vertically. This tile also works exceptionally well for large spaces that often benefit from the added dimension the beveled edge provides. When you are considering your project, here are some different layout patterns for subway tile.
