There are traditional tile designs that remain forever loved, like subway tile or marble accents. For a more contemporary style, there are design elements that shift with the times. As new trends take shape and new stone and tile products are released, there are modern adaptations to many facets of design.

Before selecting your favorite tile or stone products, it’s valuable to know what will work best in your space. There’s nothing worse than finding an amazing tile that suits visual preferences only to discover it won’t necessarily work in your bathroom as you intended.

Modern Porcelain Tile

For both modern-looking bathroom floor tile and wall tile, porcelain is a great choice. It is highly durable, color permanent, and versatile to look good in any space. It’s also abrasion-resistant, and cannot be torn, gouged, or punctured. Plus, there is a bountiful selection of colors, shapes, and sizes to keep your bathroom looking modern and current. Porcelain does not need to be sealed as it is non-porous, keeping maintenance simple. Your tile will continue to look its best with a basic cleaning with a damp sponge or mop and a pH-balanced cleaner. Porcelain can be installed in just about any area of the bathroom, wet or dry, though some of our designs are best suited for installation on walls. There is a slight caveat in options for the shower floor, too.  

Invictus Vein Cut comes in numerous sizes from large format (any length over 15”) to small 2” x 2” mosaic mesh. Mosaic mesh is great for a shower floor because the small pieces can conform to the slight grading needed to channel water and help prevent slips with the grout lines. Available in four light, neutral colors that emulate vein cut travertine.

Reflexion brings a modern taste to any environment while moonlighting as concrete. It comes in four cool colors that radiate versatility, along with various sizes from large format to a shower floor-compatible 2” x 2” mesh. Canyon represents as slate and comes in four neutral colors in a variety of sizes and finishes, including R11 Anti-Slip Finish which is perfect for a modern wet room. Also, take a peek at Glam subway tile and its variety of neutral colors from light to dark, in matte or glazed finish. It has a slight undulating texture and a glaze with organic variations, making it a beautiful choice for modern bathroom and shower walls.

Touch gracefully brings texture into play while exhibiting a simplistic, modern appeal in five colors and two sizes—12” x 24” and 2” x 2” mosaic mesh. Finally, our 3D option adds an abundance of texture to a vertical space, perfectly accentuating the graceful flow of water, thus making a sound selection for a bathroom or shower wall.

Natural stone provides the grandeur of luxury, especially in marble. From its timeless appeal to its modern practicality, natural stone is always in style. Stone is mined from the earth, providing a raw sense of beauty and connecting us deeper to our surroundings. When we use natural stone inside our homes, we tend to feel more grounded and relaxed. Be it tile or slab, natural stone turns your modern bathroom into an oasis. Opal White Satin has a classic, elegant, and clean aesthetic that lights up any modern bathroom as a vertical surface or vanity countertop.

While the benefits are worth the extra care, know that stone is a porous surface so it does require sealing. Sealing is a rather easy process where you, or a hired professional, apply an impregnating sealer that allows the stone to breathe and remain beautiful while deterring moisture absorption, dirt/grime, and chemical damage. Routine cleaning , however, is rather straightforward: use a mop or soft cloth with warm water to wipe the stone surface; and, if needed, use a pH-balanced neutral cleaner and rinse thoroughly. Similar to porcelain, natural stone can be used in many areas of the bathroom or wet room, but with a few exceptions.

Modern Bathroom Trends

While tile can create a timeless display, chances are you’ll want to hone in on some modern trends. Currently, many design ideas for a modern bathroom look focus on patterned tile. This tile type is a great way to add accents or incorporate areas of deeper color surrounded by neutral tile. Patterned bathroom tile is a versatile addition that can adorn floors, walls, and showers, in most scenarios. Additionally, deep veining is showing up in modern bathrooms. Similar to the idea of incorporating patterned tile as an accent, deep veining is another option. While the individual tile makes a statement, so can the way you lay the tile. Tile can be laid to form its own type of pattern, even if it’s just one solid color. For instance, subway tile has been a traditional tile layout since the early 1900s, but maybe instead of your tile going in a horizontal display, you stack them vertically… don’t be afraid to get creative!
